Just Hooked: Get Organized and Writing!

Clutter can manage to cramp even the most dedicated fashionista’s style. It’s happened to all of us. Those few extra receipts and wrappings pile up in the bottom of your purse and you have to dig for what seems like an eternity to find your lip gloss or cell phone. Though you haven’t quite approached Hoarder territory, the disorganization makes it difficult to find something when you need it most (like your business card for a possible networking opportunity, or your phone to plug in the number of the cutie from the restaurant).

I have good news for disorganized purses, bags and cars everywhere! Orangfish has just hooked a new product called Grid-It that makes organization easy. The series of elasticized bands that adjust to fit any size object will keep everything in place so you’ll know exactly where to find your pen or wallet in record time. The great thing is you can use it pretty much anywhere you need a little extra order. It can be used as a sun visor organizer, a 3 ring binder accessory, and in your purse or laptop bag. This little gadget is so versatile! This is a lifesaver for self-admitted pack-rats or purse over-stuffers. But it’s also great for even the neatest people since it keeps everything conveniently at your fingertips. This is a practical gift for anyone on your holiday list this year. It’s the gift of organization!

Where do you need organization most in your life right now?

Have you ever had a special notebook where you jotted down your plans, favorite recipes, goals, sketches or just random thoughts you had? Getting your thoughts out on paper is a great way to organize all the ideas whizzing around in your brain. You’ll feel relieved after, and its always fun looking at old notebooks years later.

Of course, the notebooks you write in can’t just be plain and boring. They have to be as special and unique as the thoughts you write in them. Orangefish has just hooked my new favorite journals. They have sayings on the font in big colourful letters like “I’m going to change the world and this is my plan”, “I’m going to be a rockstar and this is my plan”, “I’m going to be the boss and this is my plan”, “I’m going to be a Nobel Prize winner and this is my plan”, and “I’m going to be ridiculously rich and this is my plan”. The notebooks are a whimsical concoction of sentimentality mixed with a hint of cleverness and humour. You’ll definitely find me carrying around one of these this holiday season. It’s a great gift idea and comes at the perfect time for New Years resolutions. What’s a better motivator to achieve your goals than an adorable notebook? Wrap up the “Change the World” notebook with a special eco-friendly gift. Or combine the “Rockstar” notebook with a new ipod for the perfect gift for your favorite music lover.

Orangefish has also hooked another set of notebooks. The brightly coloured journals are labeled with titles like “Chefs I met and liked”, “Shopaholics I met and liked”, or “Lovers I had and liked”. Jot down all your favorite memories so you’ll never forget them. Then years later, share them with your friends or family. For a thoughtful gift for the friend who loves to cook, wrap the “Chefs I met and liked” journal together with a new cookbook, or tickets to a special cooking convention or classes.

Holiday Party Etiquette 101

With the holidays comes the holiday parties. These can either be the best or the worst part of the season. Awkward, drama-filled parties are no fun for the host or the guests but exciting and friendly ones can be a ton of fun. So here is my guide to surviving the holiday party season.

1. Don’t be late!
I love being fashionable. But in this case, being fashionably late is not very stylish. This is especially true of dinner parties. Chances are, the host has carefully planned every second of the party, and has made sure that all the food would remain warm and fresh. A good host also knows to wait for all the guests to arrive before serving the food. So, if you’re late, everyone will be sitting impatiently (and probably very hungry) waiting for you. Nothing is more awkward then showing up late and having a tablefull of angry, hungry faces staring at you. And when the food is finally served it will probably either be cold or overcooked. So please, don’t be fashionably late, be fashionably on time.

2. Holiday Fashion
One of my favorite parts! There’s nothing like getting dolled up for a glamorous cocktail or dinner party. The usual rules of clothing etiquette apply here. You’re not going to a club, so watch how short your hemlines are and how deep the v-neck is (especially if it’s a family friendly party). Here are some stylish outfits I put together for casual, semi-casual, and formal parties. I’ve used some ultra chic Orangefish accessories to add some extra bling. The holidays and new years is a great excuse to add sparkle to your outfits!

3. Table Manners
Please, I beg of you, use basic table manners. I’m sure we’ve all seen people eating with their hands, double dipping, reaching across the table, or picking their teeth and wondered “what were you thinking”. Of course you don’t have to act like you’re out for tea with the Queen of England but you also don’t have to eat like you’ve never seen a utensil before.

4. Hostess Gifts
Though this may seem like a small detail, it makes a huge difference. If someone is gracious enough to invite you over, its polite to at least bring a small gift. This can be a a bottle of wine, or a home decoration. If you are staying at their house overnight, consider purchasing a larger gift.
These Napkin rings are a great hostess gift that is both practical and stylish: http://www.orangefish.ca/products/bargainbuys/$25.00/1/blackandrednapkinrings

These winestoppers are a great alternative for the typical wine gift. Attach them to a nice bottle of wine with a pretty ribbon and you’ve got a perfect gift! http://www.orangefish.ca/products/bargainbuys/$25.00/1/heartwinestopper

Just relax and have fun at this years holiday parties. As long as you don’t make any comments about your aunt’s bad haircut, or point out that someone has been eating a few too many Christmas cookies, you’re sure to have a great time. The Holidays are about friendship and family so banish the drama and bring on the laughter!

The bra bag offers a solution that every girl would love! It doesn’t sacrifice any space and protects your delicates at the same time. And it’s super stylish so it’s fashionista-friendly! The floral cosmetic case is one of our newer products that is taking the site by storm. It is a retro-style cosmetic case made from the material used for those stylized floral bathing caps you see in old movies. It’s waterproof and super stylish! Help Us Pick a Charitable Organization!

While I plan out my holiday season I can’t help but feel grateful for everything I’ve been given in my life. Many of us vacation during the holidays, buy gifts, enjoy cozy cocktail parties, and feast on holiday treats. But the holidays are also the season for giving, and for looking to help those who can’t enjoy holidays in the same way we can. Not everyone can afford a fancy Christmas ham, or to stuff the kids stockings full of goodies. Every person deserves to have a carefree holiday where they don’t have to worry about whether they can afford to eat that day. There are a bunch of websites that make it easy for people to give some of their holiday fund to those who need it most. Alternativegifts.org is a great example. It lets you purchase small gifts like chickens, school books, or medicine for specific regions around the world. It’s also a great gift idea for the person in your life who doesn’t need anything but would like to help others.

Orangefish also wants to give this Holiday season. Every year we like to support specific charities like Verity Girls Club, and Autism Ontario. This year we’re looking for new unique charities to give to. That’s why we need your help! Do you know any charitable organizations that could directly benefit from Orangefish’s support? If you do, please let us know and help us make a difference!

Rock Out In Style

If you’ve read enough of my blogs you may have realized that I believe anything can be an accessory. This is especially true of electronics. Any analysis of our current society will say that we live in a wired world, and really who can deny it? So why not embrace it! One of the biggest woes of modern culture is standardization. Sure, all the iPod headphones look the same, but now yours doesn’t have too! Add a personal touch to your iPod with Chic Buds. These stylish headphones are decorated with swarovski crystals. The extra bit of sparkle makes a big difference! It’s an attention grabber, and you can’t help but feel like a princess when you’re donning swarovskis.

Got a guy in your life.  Add a personal touch to his iPod or smart phone with Rock Buds. These stylish headphones are decorated with with cool designs that will add to your personal style.

The retractor ensures that your ear buds will never get tangled again. And thank goodness too! I don’t know how many times I’ve had to untangle and unknot my mess of headphones. I’m so excited to sport chic buds this winter! I may just have to buy some for all my friends though, because once you see them you can’t help but love them! These headphones would make the perfect gift for anyone from a teenager to someone in their fourties. Everyone could use a little extra sparkle in their life!

You can find these new goodies at Orangefish.ca

What’s your favorite song right now on your iPod?

GG's Guide to Having Fun with Makeup!

Makeup can be just as fun to experiment with as clothing and accessories. I love changing up my usual eyeshadow colour, or adding a winged eyeliner tip, or even trying out a red lip. Of course, as we change and age our makeup preferences change as well. But makeup should be fun at any age! So here’s my quick summary of this years makeup trends as well as tips for everyone from teens to fourty +.

Teens:
This is a pretty broad age category from 13-19. I know when I was 13 I wasn’t wearing much more than cotton candy flavoured lip gloss. But at 19, I definitely already had a fully stocked makeup bag. The key to teen makeup is looking fresh faced. Selena Gomez (or her makeup artist) always seems to nail this youthful look. She does a bit of eyeliner, with a light dusting of neutral eyeshadow (light pink or brown), some mascara, a touch of blush, and a slightly tinted lip gloss. The emphasis tends to not be on the eyeshadow but the eyelashes and the eyeliner. Less is more at this age. Just have fun with it!

Trendy Twenties and Thirties:
It’s all about finding a balance between wanting to have fun with makeup while still keeping it professional while you build a professional career for yourself. There’s a time and a place for leopard print nails, but your conservative office job is definitely not the place to try it out. But outside the office you can experiment with colour and different styles. I know I love rocking a gorgeous purple eyeshadow for night time.

The Smokey Eye is an all time favorite of mine as well. However, I like using brown instead of black or grey. It looks more natural and the great thing is, you can wear a light smokey look for work, and just pack your eyeshadow in your purse and add a little extra before you head out for a night on the town or a hot date. Just add some liquid liner, and some more lip gloss and you’re all set! I know girls, liquid liner is intimidating and if you’ve never used it, you probably have nightmares about it ending up all over the place. But I’m telling you, it’s worth experimenting with. It leaves a nice clean line and you can have a little extra fun with winged tips (my current favorite night look).

Here's a look at a fab day look and night look from Beyonce.

Fabulous Fourties +
It’s all about the moisture! First, drink water, and lots of it. Then make sure to moisturize your lips, face, neck, and body. Caking on foundation is the least flattering thing anyone can do for their skin. If your complexion is even, consider using a tinted moisturizer instead (or for a homemade fix mix a little foundation together with your moisturizer). It will keep your skin from looking powdery while still giving it a finished look.
I know girls love sparkly things. But shimmery makeup is no ones friend after 35. It accentuates any lines or wrinkles you might have. Matte eyeshadows are your new best friend!
This is a great step by step guide to a full face of makeup for women over 40 from Beautysurvival.com.

or if you are able to, try out a makeup consultation. It's great to get an expert's help to pick out your perfect shades and teach you application techniques to bring out your unique beauty. Check out Grace Makeup

GG Makeup Trend Report:
Matte lips, matte skin, and khaki nails are totally in this fall and winter. I’ve tried all three of these trends and have a few things to say. First of all, Khaki/neutral nails can look quite chic if you pick the colour that matches your skin tone well. Chanel’s “Particuliere” was sold out for most of the summer and is a great example of this trend. I have to admit though, I still like the fun pop of colour of a red nail (it’s an oldie but a goodie). I am not a fan at all of the Matte skin trend. I think it looks 100% fake. The point of foundation is to try and make people believe that you’re not even wearing any foundation and your skin naturally looks that good (if only!). I like a more dewey fresh faced look for any age group. Matte Lips can be stylish as long as you apply enough lipstick. If you’re wearing a darker lipstick, make sure your lips are well moisturized a few days before so your lipstick won’t look cakey, or creased.

 My number one tip:
Glamour is all in your confidence. Trends are a great starting point but always make sure to wear what you love. It’s all about showing your personality and having fun with your makeup. Makeup shouldn’t be about covering up, but about highlighting the things that make you a unique and beautiful person.

Check out this fabulous makeup bag from Orangefish.ca. It’s totally funky and will make sure to brighten your morning makeup routine.

Do you have any secret beauty tips to share?

Just Hooked: Wearable Art!

Orangefish has just hooked a bunch of new and fabulous designs in our sterling silver necklaces! These unique and whimsical pendant designs add extra charm and shine to any outfit. Whether you pair it with a cute cocktail dress or a blazer and jeans, these necklaces are perfect! I love them for work especially because they’re so sophisticated but still have the healthy dose of fun that I always look for in accessories. The best part is, because it’s sterling silver you can know that your necklace will stay sparkling for years to come. There are so many different designs so you can pick one that you feel truly represents your personality. I love the butterfly and the cherry blossoms because they remind me of the beauty of nature.

They’re coming in just in time for Christmas too! Cute, stylish and definitely for those that have a hobby or are passionate about something. Don’t be shy – show the world what you love! Consider the tree or butterfly for nature lovers, the cupcake or ice cream for your gals that have a sweet tooth, the bike for those crazy city cyclists or the music note for the dj’s that are constantly dropping a beat. There is even a 4 leaf clover for the Irish and the double circle for those that believe what goes around comes around…again and again. The price point is modest and the value is great! Wrap it up with a pretty bow and box, and add a special card and you have a thoughtful beautiful gift. This is most definitely wearable art that connects to the soul.
