Beach Chic!
After spending the majority of the long weekend at the beach catching some rays I thought I’d write a post about my favorite beach fashion trends (and my not so favorite ones…)
First of all, the most important thing, beyond what your wearing, is to show some good beach etiquette. Being kind and courteous is a fabulous accessory that’s always in season! I can’t tell you how many times last weekend I almost got smacked in the face by a Frisbee. The beach is definitely a great plae to catch up on your Frisbee game…just make sure to do it in an open space! That way, if someone misses a toss, you won’t risk giving an innocent beach goer a black eye! After almost getting hit twice, I was actually a bit nervous to just relax and close my eyes, incase a Frisbee came my way again!
Now onto the best part, the fashion!
First my fashion Don’ts:
- Do not pick a bathing suit that is the same colour (or close to) your skin tone. You will look naked from 30 feet away! Plus, it’s just not very fun!
- Be careful when picking out a monokini. They’re totally cute as long as you’re wearing super high spf sunscreen or staying in the shade. Weird cutout tan lines will not look so stylish when, 2 days later you bring back your two piece.
My Fashion Dos:
- Do rock a fashionable hate – it’s practical, sun safe, and totally chic!
- Do try bandeaus – no icky tanlines!
- Do rock your body! Confidence is the best accessory! Strut your stuff like you’re on a runway in Paris!
- Don’t be afraid of colour – it’s summer people!
Here are some of my favorite Beach Fashion looks that I’ve put together:
Head to Polyvore and create your own beach look! Then send it to me at abayer@orangefish.ca and share your creativity! Also, check out all my other Polyvore creations (That site is just way too fun!)

Oscar fashion hits, misses, and close calls
The Oscars may be a night designed to celebrate great successes in the film industry, but who is kidding who, isn’t it also all about the fashion! I’ll sit through those dreary 2 hour long red carpet specials and watch reporters make total fools of themselves just so I can catch a glimpse of a glamorous gown or handsome tux.
Mila Kunis
I die. This dress is just so gorgeous that no one cares that she didn’t win best supporting actress. The colour, the cut, the fun lace details. Love it! Even though Joan Rivers hated her Golden Globes dress, I have to say that she might just be my best dressed lady of the whole awards season.

Natalie Portman
Defbinitely no surprise here. I think that no matter what she wore, I probably would have loved it. She’s just Hollywood’s leading lady right now and you can’t seem to criticize her. I love the dress. The colour and hints of sparkle are gorgeous. I do thin that all her accessories are a little bridesmaid-ish and matchy-matchy. I would have chosen a different colour shoe and handbag but then again who am I to say anything. This is Natalie Portman I’m talking about.

Hilary Swank
Usually not a huge favorite of mine but Hilary really stepped it up this Oscar season. This dress totally reminds me of Carrie Bradshaw and I love it. The ombre effect softens the feathers, and the mix of sequins adds just the right amount of glam without going too “viva las vegas”.

Nicole Kidman
Nicole, Nicole, Nicole. You did so well at the Grammys. Why did you pick the biggest night of the year to wear this hideous dress? Why any girl would ever want to wear a dress that makes their hips look bigger is beyond me (especially when you’ve got a rockin bod like Nicole!). I’m not sure who she stole this tablecloth/bedspread/curtain from but Nicole its not nice to steal and you should really give it back. Plus, everyone knows that curtain fabric will always get you on the worst dressed list.

I would talk about Helena Bonham Carter, but that would just be too obvious. She knows she’s crazy and she rocks it. Who can really criticize her.
Special shoutout goes to the biebs. Justin Bieber gets my vote for best improved hair. Sure the signature do is gone, but I think this new one is a million times better. Looks like Selena Gomez is doing him some good! Aren't they just adorable, all coordinated?

Overall I have to say that I was maybe a little let down by this years Oscars fashion. I thought that the Golden Globes really shown with its array of gorgeous dresses, and more people played it safe during the Oscars.
What would you wear if you were on the Oscars red carpet? Would you play it safe or pick something that might cause a little debate but could look totally fabulous?

TIFF Comes to Town
It’s that special time of year ladies and gentlemen; TIFF is in town! And with it comes a flurry of celebrities and crowds of fans. If you live in Toronto, or know people who do, you may have noticed your Facebook mini feed become overwhelmed with status updates and mobile photo uploads of your friend’s latest celebrity stalking escapades.
Orangefish’s CEO Janet Lewis got into the action and attended the TIFF opening night party. The drinks were flowing with Skyy vodka as the party’s sponsor. I now have a new drink recipe to test out: the Skyy Berry Baruchel. It’s made with Skyy vodka, lemon juice, elderflower cordial, and blueberry juice. Give it a try and let me know what you guys think!
Here’s a little TIFF gala fashion insider from Janet: Jeannie Becker certainly has her work cut out for her in Canada - there were some pretty outrageous outfits - from skin tight zebra print dresses and matching shoes, to men in brocade jackets. Oh, and people wearing jeans…to a gala. Clearly some people haven’t watched enough episodes of “What Not to Wear”.
And it wasn’t just the fans sporting some major fashion crimes. Celebs (both A, B and C-list) were doing it left and right. Check out Nellie Furtado’s unflattering getup. I’m not quite sure what her stylist was thinking when she came up with this douze. Nellie we know you can do better!
Thankfully stars like Megan Fox (yes, you read that right: Megan Fox) were a breath of fresh fashionista air with stylish ensembles. I’m absolutely loving the nude heel trend, in fact I just recently grabbed myself a pair. And her white dress is simple but classy. I also love Rachelle Lefevre's Bandage dress. It's super flattering. Unfortunately, Finding a best dressed this year was more difficult than usual with typically stylish celebs like Blake Lively donning unflattering and oddly designed outfits.
There’s still plenty of TIFF excitement to come. And thank goodness too! Checking the best and worst dressed lists daily has kept me quite busy. And i’m still crossing my fingers to catch a glimpse of the dashing James Franco.
Have you spotted any celebs around t-dot lately? Share your stories or pictures!

A Fashionista's Beach Survival Guide
Last weekend turned out to be a great surprise – what a a wonderful sunny weekend. Which meant the Beaches in Toronto were packed full of people. I joined in on the fun and stopped by the Volleyball tourney that was going on. With the Beaches Jazz Festival coming up, and hopefully many more beachy weekends on the horizon I thought it was necessary to create my Fashionista Beach Survival kit:
You’ll need
a) A fun and flirty bikini and cover-up. I love the look of the trendy monokinis but can you say bad tan lines!
b) A beach tote that’s both practical and chic (leave your white leather LV at home girls!)
c) some trendy sunglasses and flip flops. Accessories are an easy way to show off the latest trends (especially if you can find them cute and cheap).
d) A statement accessory. I prefer not to wear metal because it’ll get hot under the sun. This Tagua Nut necklace is super cute and environmentally friendly too!
Now you’re set to take over the beach! We spend all winter huddled inside so why not head out and soak up some good ol’ Vitamin E (but don’t forget suntan lotion. Looking like a giant lobster is not so glamorous).
And don’t forget, Orangefish.ca’s The Heat is On: From the Boardroom to the Beach is happening this Wednesday. You’ll receive some great tips about summer style, fitness, and beach reads. Not to mention, you’ll get a gift bag valued at over $100.00 and a chance to win some great prizes. If you’re in Toronto, you don’t want to miss this!
